Dangers of Plastic
Surgery
Are You Willing To Face the Dangers of Plastic
Surgery?
Maybe your nose isn’t quite
straight, or perhaps you have a birthmark on your leg that has
bothered you for years. Before you decide on cosmetic
procedures to change the way you look, be sure that you
understand the dangers of plastic surgery. Decide for yourself
whether the benefits really outweigh the risks.
First, although plastic
surgery is usually a minor procedure, it remains a surgical
procedure. Any person who undergoes surgery risks death.
Although the risk of fatal complications with plastic surgery
is incredibly small, people do occasionally die during or
because of complications.
Another danger that people
face is scarring. Doctors who perform plastic surgery make
incisions, or cuts, in the skin. Cuts create scars. Sometimes
these scars may be hidden, while others are obvious. If the
surgeon errs, the patient may have an obvious scar. Be
confident that your physician is skilled before you schedule
the procedure.
Infection is also a potential
complication of plastic surgery. The incision is an opening is
a skin. Bacteria sometimes enter the skin through these
openings, and cause an infection to develop. Understand how to
properly care for your incisions and know the signs and
symptoms of infection before leaving the hospital or surgery
center.
People who have surgery may
experience bleeding. Although this complication of plastic
surgery is relatively rare, sometimes a tiny slip can cause
significant bleeding. The danger of bleeding is that you may
have to stay in the hospital, get blood transfusions, or face
even greater risks. Carefully watch for bleeding, and tell the
doctor if it occurs.
Occasionally, blood clots can
occur after surgery. This can happen if people have a blood
disorder, or because of the procedure itself. If the physician
does not realize this and remove the blood clot, patients risk
having a heart attack, stroke, or lung damage. Be aware of the
symptoms of blood clots and report them to your doctor right
away.
One other danger of plastic
surgery is the potential for nerve damage. Even a very small
incision can damage or sever a nerve. Nerve damage can result
in muscle paralysis; this can be very mild or extremely
obvious. Again, the competence of your surgeon is crucial to
preventing this complication.
If you decide to have a
cosmetic procedure performed, be aware of the potential dangers
of plastic surgery. Know how to prevent these complications
from occurring, and report any signs or symptoms of problems to
your doctor immediately.
